This book is the first in a series of 3 vampire novels by David Wellington. The next in the series is 99 Coffins and the final book is Vampire Zero.He has also written a trilogy on zombies beginning with Monster Island. Set in Pennsylvania the story takes place twenty years after Jameson Arkeley destroys a nest of vampires and imprisons their leader, Justina Malvern. State Trooper Laura Caxton is called in to investigate a homicide that leads to the discovery that three vampires survived the attack and are determined to free Malvern and replenish their bloodthirsty clan. The two set about trying to exterminate the vampires.
There is nothing romantic or gothic about these vampires who are portrayed as bloodthirsty monsters which is a very different take on the vampires portrayed in the Twilight series. Readers of Anne Rice and Stephenie Meyer beware you won't like these vampires, your sympathies are with the two main characters of Arkeley and Laura Caxton.
This story is a fast paced thriller and has plenty of blood and gore. Highly recommended for lovers of horror.
