Mistry's second novel is set in India around the time Prime Minister Indira Gandi has declared a State of Emergency. The tale is about four people struggling to survive during this time. With great empathy and wit Mistry introduces the reader to each character's story. He tells a tale about India's working poor who must cope with corruption. Each character learns to maintain a balance between hope and despair. This is a well written and interesting read. A favourite among some members of the Tuesday Evening Book Club.

Yes, a great read enjoyed by our group too highly recommended!
I, too, enjoed this very much. The depiction of the four varied characters who share a small flat, their histories, and their joys and sorrows, set aginst the background of a country on the verge of chaos, makes for a great read.
Beautifully written.
