The novel chronicles the life of Logan Mountstuart. From his boyhood in Uruguay, his education at Oxford, his wartime adventures, his career and finally his retirement in France. The story is told in the form of journal entries by the protagonist. Most members of the Tuesday Evening Book Club found the novel to be an extremely interesting and entertaining read. One member remarked that this was her all time favourite novel.
