TRY IF YOU LIKE Mr. Wigg (Inga Simpson) The Brother Cadfael Chronicles (Ellis Peters) Caleb's Crossing (Geraldine Brooks) OUTLINE This is my favourite book. The narrator is a bottle of wine following the life of worn-out writer Jay, who once befriended an old gardener called Joe. Jay's travels take him to France, where he meets a mysterious woman and her deaf child who live next door. REVIEW The language is wonderfully descriptive, full of tastes and smells. If you enjoy wine, this book is a must as it describes the qualities of wine as being like those of a human being. The flashbacks to Jay's childhood at Pog Hill are vividly described and it becomes very clear what a positive influence old Joe is in Jay's life. The theme of friendship is strong and comforting throughout the story.
