Cold Mountain by Charles Frazier

 It is the American Civil War.  A homesick, wounded soldier leaves his hospital bed and sets out to walk home to his beloved Cold Mountain.  Graphic scenes encountered on his year long journey, beautifully presented.  I loved it.

The most memorable book I read in 2011.  Beautiful descriptions and interesting story of life during the American Civil War.
