From the Khyber Pass and Afghanistan to the Sudanese desert, from palatial homes in rural England to the London slums, the novel is set during the closing days of Queen Victoria's empire, 1893-8 and shows the courage and strength of the army and the greed of merchants making money from natives.  Set against this background is a love story that evolves around the changing ideals of many as they look to the new century.  A book I would recommend to all.
