This unsettling novel can easily be devoured in one sitting as Emma Chapman’s sparse yet compelling prose requires little effort on the readers’ part. Marta is a middle aged mother whose only son Kylan has just left home leaving her with what her husband Hector says is ‘empty nest syndrome’. Having spent her entire married life caring for her husband and son and making sure domestic life is perfect Marta now feels useless and confused. She is starting to see things and strange memories are flashing before her eyes. She has stopped taking her medication the little pink pills that her husband Hector claims have kept her happy and functioning ever since the death of her parents many years ago. But Marta has been married a long time and she has trouble remembering her life before Hector. She believes the pills may be stopping her from recalling the life she had before she got married and with each day more and more memories surface and the reader starts to wonder what is real and what isn't  This is really very good for a first time novelist and I highly recommend it for those who like their books eerily dark and intriguing.
