Set in the early 1800's, "Maria and the Admiral" is inspired by the true story of Maria Graham, a ship captain's widow who is one of the first women travel writers. Based on a true story, the novel re-lives the relationship between Maria and Thomas Cochrane, who led the Chilean fleet to victory in 1822, which signalled the country's independence from Spain. Set against the vibrant colours of of Chile and Brazil, with a mix of shipping movements, politics and earthquakes, it all makes for a really good and informative read.
