A fictional story about a murder trial set in rural Vermont. Sibly Danforth was an experienced midwife who had delivered more than 500 home births. In 1981 Charlotte Fugett Bedford died under Sibyl's care and as a result Sibyl was charged with involuntary manslaughter and practicing medicine without a licence.
There were mixed reviews from the Tuesday Evening Book Club. Some members enjoyed the novel and thought that it explored a very controversial issue such as home births, while other members didn't really enjoy the novel as much.
