Louis de Bernieres's series of short stories based around the village of Notwithstanding is like an English version of Garrison Kiellor's Lake Wobegone but not as funny. In fact some of the stories are quite heartbreaking in their humanness which I think makes the characters more real than those that inhabit Lake Wobegone. I found it an enjoyable read.
