If your ancestors were early white settlers or indigenous people, then read this book. If not, read it anyway. Many disasters befall this large family's efforts to succeed on the land and interact with indigenous tribes, but love, too, is entwined in the tale's telling. A difficult book to put down. A movie could eventuate from this powerful, beautifully written first novel.
