The witchcraft trials in 17th century Salem, Massachusetts are the focus of this novel. The rigours of life endured by the hardy pioneers of this era makes one realise how much better life is some 400 years later. The duplicity and self serving attitude of those in authority, who terrorised the majority and degraded women by masking their actions under the cloak of religion, make one realise how little has changed.
