This fabulous prequel to the Black Magician Trilogy is set hundreds of years before the events of the first books. It could be read on its own but I think it would be better to read the trilogy first. One of the main mysteries from the trilogy is discovered at the end of this book - its fantastic!
Tessia is a village girl who is discovered to have latent magic, and so is apprenticed to the local lord. Her life changes dramatically, and is full of the excitement of learning her talents but also the horrifying reality that war may be coming to her country and conflicting magicians will have to band together to stop it. It is full of magic and mystery, and the build up to the war between neighbouring lands is intense.
