David Liss won the Edgar Award for best first novel, "A Conspiracy of Paper".  This is his seventh book,

and the first of his I've read.  I found it to be a cross between Harry Potter and Georgette Heyer, ie. the

 regency world mixed with a lot of magic.  Well written but not to my taste.
