Sometimes a book comes along that ticks all the boxes and this is one of them. Alex Woods was hit on the head by a meteorite at age 10 now suffers from epilepsy, has an offbeat clairvoyant mother and a far more intellectual mind than peers his own age. He’s a prime target for bullies and it is an incident with such low lives that leads him to form an unlikely friendship with American loner Mr Peterson. I loved the characters of Alex Woods and Mr Peterson both of whom are quirky and lovable with unique personalities and attitudes to life. The friendship they form will shape both of their destinies in profound and life changing ways. This is a deeply touching book but it is also funny and I admire a writer who can weave serious themes into the story without taking itself too seriously.
