The new novel by JK Rowling has nothing to do with wizards or witches or evil magic and the author and publishers are quite clear in saying that the book is not for children but is her first written for adults. So before you read it you might want to check out this review from the Guardian newspaper. Just click on the link:

A suggestion for you to read before the real journal is published is the Dracula Dossier by James Reese based on the fictitious journal and letters of Bram Stoker. A great thriller with the Dracula story, Bram Stoker's life and Jack the Ripper intertwined!

Peter Temple has been awarded the highly acclaimed 2010 Miles Franklin Literary Award for his novel Truth.

Temple had to fight off stiff competition from five other authors, including Deborah Forster, Sonya Hartnett and Alex Miller, to win the $42,000 prize, presented at an award dinner on Tuesday 22 June in Sydney.

The Miles Franklin literary award is recognised as Australia's most prestigious prize and is awarded to the novel of the highest literary merit that presents Australian life.

The awards were established in 1957 and it is the first time a genre novel has won. This decision shows how far the crime novel has developed as a literary genre.

"It unusual for a crime writer to receive such a prestigious award, so cop it sweet," Temple told AAP upon receiving the award.

Truth, the sequel to Temple's highly acclaimed The Broken Shore, is a complex crime novel set against the background of Victoria's 2009 bushfires.

Award judge Morag Fraser said Truth was "writing tempered with fire".

"It was a controversial and challenging short list, accomplished and diverse in ways that made the judges' task extremely difficult," Ms Fraser said.

"Each novel offered a quite distinct and compelling fictional journey."

The six novelists shortlisted this year were Deborah Forster for her debut novel The Book of Emmett, Sonya Hartnett for Butterfly, Alex Miller for Lovesong, Brian Castro for The Bath Fugues, and 27-year-old Craig Silvey for Jasper Jones.

In 1971, just two years after it began, the Booker Prize ceased to be awarded retrospectively and became, as it is today, a prize for the best novel in the year of publication. At the same time, the date on which the award was given moved from April to November. As a result of these changes, there was whole year's gap when a wealth of fiction, published in1970, fell through the net. These books were simply never considered for the prize.

Now, 40 years on, a panel of three judges - all of whom were born in or around 1970 - has been appointed to select a shortlist of six novels from those books. They are journalist and critic, Rachel Cooke, ITN newsreader, Katie Derham and poet and novelist, Tobias Hill.

Here is the longlist of 22 books which would have been eligible and are still in print and generally available today. They are:

o Brian Aldiss, The Hand Reared Boy
o Paul Bailey, Trespasses
o H.E.Bates, A Little Of What You Fancy
o Nina Bawden, The Birds On The Trees
o Melvyn Bragg, A Place In England
o Christy Brown, Down All The Days
o Len Deighton, Bomber
o J.G.Farrell, Troubles
o Elaine Feinstein, The Circle
o Shirley Hazzard, The Bay Of Noon
o Reginald Hill, A Clubbable Woman
o Susan Hill, I'm The King Of The Castle
o Francis King, A Domestic Animal
o David Lodge, Out Of The Shelter
o Iris Murdoch, A Fairly Honourable Defeat
o Shiva Naipaul, Fireflies
o Patrick O'Brian, Master and Commander
o Mary Renault, Fire From Heaven
o Ruth Rendell, A Guilty Thing Surprised
o Muriel Spark, The Driver's Seat
o Patrick White, The Vivisector

The list includes many distinguished writers whose books have stood the test of time including J.G. Farrell, whose The Siege of Krishnapur won the prize in 1973; Iris Murdoch, whose The Sea, The Sea won in 1978 and whose novels were shortlisted in four other years; David Lodge, who was shortlisted in 1984 and 1988 and chaired the prize in 1989; Muriel Spark, who was shortlisted in 1969 for her novel The Public Image and in 1981 for Loitering with Intent; Nina Bawden whose Circles of Deceit was shortlisted in 1987 and Susan Hill, whose The Bird of Night was shortlisted in 1972 and who judged the 1975 prize.

.Here is the shortlistannounced in March:

The Birds on the Trees by Nina Bawden (Virago)
• Troubles by J G Farrell (Phoenix)
• The Bay of Noon by Shirley Hazzard (Virago)
• Fire From Heaven by Mary Renault (Arrow)
• The Driver's Seat by Muriel Spark (Penguin)
• The Vivisector by Patrick White (Vintage
