Although I really enjoyed her last novel, The Secret River, I'm finding this one a bit hard to get into. Maybe it's the stilted writing, its just not flowing! But the characters are quite vivid. So we'll see.

Favourite authors? Ian Rankin and Robert Wilson in crime, Ian McEwan, Andrew Greig . . . as usual my mind has gone blank when put on the spot. Really I read all sorts. Membership of two book groups keeps me busy reading what I wouldn't otherwise pick up myself, often with surprising results.

At the moment I'm into Australianna/historical - Just finished 'For the Term of His Natural Life' and have now moved on to 'The Fatal Shore' (recommended by a friend in Sydney). Any others you'd recommend?

I like the exploration of S and M but it has been taken to new levels with her. I am waiting for her new book to read to see if she has gone back to her better work. She has an amazing imagination.

Ben sits with the aircon on in the office but the boys and I are out the back every afternoon gardening and playing. Just reading to different series at the moment. Drift by penni russon, nice relationship teen type thing. And Going under by Justina Robson, also good fantasy. I will keep going with the true blood, I have read the first two so far. Looking forward to trying the patrica briggs ones though that Jacqui recommended.

I co-ordinate a Leadership Programme at work, so like to keep up with trends & different views on leadership. The author is a young guy so his style is personable & concepts easy to grasp.

Just had a chat with Beryl from the Anglican home walking past our driveway in Clifford Street - she owned hotels all over NSW for most of her life.. her advice: "do everything, eat anything, flash the bird". I noticed that Stephanie Dowrick who is one of my favourite writers is asking for readers to be 'activists' with the decline in bookstores like borders and some Angus and Robertsons. Joining a reading community is my contribution to this movement! I also belong to a great bookclub which has been running for over 20years.

I love all books and have a passion for reading novels primarily fiction. I'm reading Lionel Shriver's We Need To Talk About Kevin. It's so well written and densely described but compelling and disturbing at the same time. I finished Favel Parrett's Past the Shallows and Alex Millers' Love Song and enjoyed them both immensely. Still on the Aust authors, I found Luke Davies' Candy a powerful and thought provoking read taking me to a world driven by drug addiction and the impact on a young relationship. Incredible writing, forceful and sensitive, at times, poetic and brutally honest as well. What are books on your recommendation list?
