I found this book to be geared very much towards the young adult reader.  As I am in my seventies, my critique may be biased to some extent.  Younger readers could identify with situations easily, but although she excels in painting a picture of the environment, she also seems flippant, and overdoses on the 'sensational' eg. p55.  The author describes the death of the mother in the book very well, in fact is fond of relating emotions.  It is altogether quite a long book and I found it a bit hard to stick it out.
