Omar Khayyam:Poet,Rebel, Astronomer by Hazhir Teimourian

The author explores the life and times of this famous Iranian who was not only the author of his famous Rubaiyat but an astronomer and significant mathematician and doctor. Because of his championing of the Persian language over Arabic and indeed all things Iranian he ran foul of the Islamic clergy.
This book provides a lot of history of Seljuk Iran and also puts this in context with what was happening in Europe and Byzantium at that time.
While much has been lost over time of Khayyam's original writings due to invasions such as that of the Mongols, the author has been able to put together a credable biography.
The book also includes the story of Edward Fitzgerald, Khayyam's celebrated translator who brought hois poetry to the attention of the West and a new translation of the Rubaiyat by the author himself.
