Naples never fails to make an impression on the visitor; usually it's at the expense of their wallet and passport. Sydney writer Peter Robb must have done his time, because he gets out with this, a third book set in southern Italy, overripe like M's Basket of Fruit and always threatening a beheading.
I recently finished Venice by Peter Ackroyd but it was a chore. Research is one thing, this is a story, and it lives up to its subject.
A footnote for librarians: Peter Robb thanks his local public library - Kings Cross - in the preface.
