This novel is set in the frozen wilderness of Canada in 1867, and centres around the murder of a reclusive fur trader, the repercussions for various people in the small town near which he lived, and the hunt for the killer. I really enjoyed this, despite not generally being a crime fiction lover- the characters were all really interesting, and were mostly portrayed very sympathetically. I found the interaction and relationships between the white people and the natives to be really interesting as well, and their various ability to cope in such a bleak environment.

It took me a while to get through this, since every time I picked it up it just made me feel extremely cold, imagining these frontier people battling across desolate, white expanses of snow covered wilderness- but it was well worth it to see all the different stories neatly woven together at the end.

Thumbs up.
