Suzanne,
Here are a couple of fiction novels featuring Australian History by Australian authors as a start.
Journal of Fletcher Christian by Peter Corris
Secret River by Kate Grenville
The Company by Arabella Edge
Hi Suzanne, one I've enjoyed recently is . For primary sources, check out The Birth of Sydney edited by Tim Flannery ... and right now the State Library's bookshop has the paperback edition of H.M. Bark Endeavour by Ray Parkin on sale... really brings Cook's voyage up the east coast of Australia to life.
Would also recommend the books by the explorers Giles, Eyre & Sturt... and anything to do with cameleering, like 'Crossing the Dead Heart' by C.T. Madigan, 'The Red Centre' by H.H. Finlayson and 'Camels and The Outback' by H.M. Barker.
