The writing world lost one of its greatest contributors on July 30 2012 with the death of Irish queen of fiction Maeve Binchy. Undoubtedly one of the world’s most successful novelists Binchy has sold over 40 million copies worldwide translated into 30 different languages. Born in Dalkey in Co Dublin Binchy published her first novel ‘Light a penny candle’ in 1982 and continued to write right up until her death at 72. If you haven't read any of her endearing tales of Irish family life now may be the time to do so. Engaging and interesting characters, intrigue, family relationships all set in the rural villages of beautiful Ireland make her novels the perfect escape or holiday read. Her death will leave a gapping hole in this much loved genre but like all great authors her novels will live on long after death.
