I highly recommend this 2015 Pullitzer Prize winning novel by Anthony Doerr. Set in St Malo during the Second World War , it tells the story of a blind French girl and a German boy whose paths cross during the German Occupation. We see how their life stories have led them to this connection. It is beautifully written with wonderful characters.
